'Sharknado 2': SyFy Sequel Set; Tweeters Offer Wacky Ideas

By    |   Thursday, 18 July 2013 07:02 AM EDT

Syfy announced Wednesday it's planning a sequel to last week's viral megahit "Sharknado," and the network is giving fans a chance to help name the follow-up film.

"Sharknado," a made-for-TV movie about — what else — a tornado that rains down sharks on Los Angeles, made a splash on social media after its July 11 debut, drawing in 5,000 tweets per minute, according to the Huffington Post.

And now Syfy execs are looking to capitalize on its social success again with "Sharknado 2," which would premiere next summer and take place in New York City.

"Every once in a while, there is a perfect storm — on television. The fans are clamoring for a sequel. Or perhaps it will be a prequel. What we can guarantee is that 'Sharknado 2' will be lots of fun," Thomas Vitale, SyFy’s executive vice president of programming and original movies, said in a statement Wednesday. "We'll be announcing more details very soon. But we didn't want our fans to worry they wouldn't get their fill of more shark fin, I mean, fun next year."
