Sheriff Victor Hill of Clayton County, Georgia, was arrested Wednesday and charged with misdemeanor reckless conduct after a bullet he fired hit real estate Gwenevere McCord in the abdomen on Sunday night, leaving her in critical condition.
According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, Hill, 50, called 911 to report the shooting, but refused to cooperate with officers when they arrived at a home on Britt Trail Drive, where McCord was working.
During the 911 call, Hill said he was "practicing police tactics" when he accidentally shot her. Gwinnett District Attorney Danny Porter later said, however, that the case is under active investigation, and that crime scene evidence seemed to contradict statements made by the sheriff during the 911 call.
Hill was released from his detention on Sunday night after he agreed to leave behind his clothes and guns. He voluntarily turned himself in on Wednesday after a warrant was issued for his arrest.
The warrant, issued by Chief Superior Court Judge Melodie Snell Conner, justified the misdemeanor charge was pertained to "Practicing police tactics while in a model home open to the public with a loaded firearm."
Ernest McCord, Gwenevere's father, said that the sheriff and his daughter know each other, and said the shooting was a "freak accident."
"They’re good friends," Ernest said. "He’s always been a perfect gentleman with us. He’s always shown concern for us and for her."
On Tuesday, Hill released his own statement about the incident.
"As reported, on May 3, 2015, I was involved in a tragic and heartbreaking accident," Hill wrote.
"Gwenevere McCord, who is very dear to me, was critically injured in this accident. Please understand that for the past 48 hours, I have been entirely focused on Gwenevere and her family. I will continue to pray unceasingly for her recovery. I ask you all to please pray for Gwenevere and her family throughout this most difficult time."
He said that he would continue in his duties as sheriff.
