As South Carolina state officials took down the Confederate flag from the grounds of the state capitol Friday morning, social media exploded with a wide range of opinions and thoughts.

USA Today reported that a seven-man South Carolina Highway Patrol Honor Guard retrieved the flag from a pole in front of the capitol with some in the huge crowd that gathered around the building chanting "take it down" and then, "Na na na na, hey, hey, hey, goodbye."

"In South Carolina, we honor tradition, we honor history, we honor heritage, but there's a place for that flag, and that flag needs to be in a museum, where we will continue to make sure people will honor it appropriately," South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley said on NBC's "Today" show Friday morning before the flag was taken down.

"But the statehouse, that's an area that belongs to everyone. And no one should drive by the statehouse and feel pain. No one should drive by the statehouse and feel like they don't belong," she continued.

There was plenty of support for the flag being taken down on social media throughout the week.

There were also supporters who wanted the Confederate flag to stay on the grounds of the state capitol.
