A supermoon combined with a lunar eclipse on Sunday for a rare event that only occurs every few decades or so, and sky gazers rejoiced with viewing parties, pictures, and social media shares galore.

Fox News reported that the moon appeared 14 percent bigger in the sky as its orbit brought it within 226,000 miles of earth, while at the same time it moved into earth's shadow, turning it a blood red-color.

The phenomenon began at 10:11 p.m. ET, and peaked at 10:47 p.m. ET.

Gathered below are some of the best posts from social media, where enthusiasts posted pictures, comments and more.
