U2's guitarist The Edge said this week that Bono "basically can't move" as he recovers from injuries he sustained in a bike accident in New York City last month, but the frontman is expected to take part in the band's 2015 World Tour, which kicks off in May.
The Edge, whose real name is David Howell Evans,
called into KROQ's "Kevin and Bean Show" Wednesday to dish on Bono's health status and break the news that U2 won't be able to perform at the radio station's upcoming 25th Annual Almost Acoustic Christmas program at The Forum in Inglewood, California.
"[Bono is] so upset about the fact that unfortunately as we’re about to announce, we’re not going to be able to do the Acoustic Christmas," Evans said. "He’s been told by his doctors to stay put. He’s back in Dublin right now and he basically can’t move for the next couple of months."
Bono was seriously injured after getting into a bicycle accident at Central Park on Nov. 16.
"We're kind of lucky he was wearing a helmet, so he didn't actually break Central Park," the U2 guitarist told KROQ. "He's made of tough stuff and he's bouncing back . . . The poor guy, basically his left elbow was shattered, so a lot of the work was reconstructing the joints and putting in wires and plates. He actually showed us some X-rays a couple days later, it looked like a miniature Eiffel Tower."
To make up for canceling the holiday show, Evans announced that the band would play The Forum as part of its 2015 world tour from May 26-31, and also said that doctors promised Bono would be well enough to hit the road by then.
"We're doing shows in North America, Canada, and the United States, and Europe," he said. "Nineteen cities and the first time in a decade that we're going to be playing indoors. We decided after the size of the 360 outdoor production that we couldn't really go any bigger, so we decided to take it smaller. So we're going indoors and we're going to do something intimate and different. We've got a lot of interesting things planned."
The bicycle accident was part of a bad month for Bono. A week before, during a flight from Ireland to Germany, a rear door flew off the plane he was traveling in. No one was injured and it's not clear how exactly the door broke off.
