"To Kill a Mockingbird" is coming to Broadway and Academy Award-winning screenwriter Aaron Sorkin has been tapped to pen the stage adaptation.

Harper Lee's treasured novel has already been honored in multiple mediums. It won a Pulitzer Prize after it was published in 1960, it was turned into a movie in 1962, and it earned Gregory Peck a best lead actor Oscar and Horton Foote a best adapted screenplay trophy in 1963.

The Hollywood Reporter stated that Tony Award-winner Bartlett Sher will direct the play and Scott Rudin will produce it for the 2017-18 Broadway season.

Sorkin won a best adapted screenplay Academy Award in 2011 for "The Social Network," and he was nominated for another adapted screenplay Oscar for "Moneyball" in 2012. He took home the Golden Globe for best screenplay this year for "Steve Jobs."

Entertainment Weekly said
Sorkin has experience writing
for the Broadway stage, penning stage productions for "A Few Good Men" and "The Farnsworth Invasion." A previous "Mockingbird" play production was performed at the Paper Mill Playhouse in New Jersey in 1991 and London in 2013.

Sorkin and Rudin worked together with the Hollywood productions of "The Social Network" and "Steve Jobs," according to The Hollywood Reporter. Rudin has a track record on Broadway as well, with "A Raisin in the Sun," "The Book of Mormon," and This Is Our Youth."

Rudin is currently on Broadway producing "The Crucible."

"To Kill a Mockingbird" centers around heroic attorney Atticus Finch, who defended a black man in Alabama during the Great Depression. The story made headlines again last year when Lee, 89, released a follow-up to the novel, titled, "Go Set a Watchman," according to The New York Times.
