A stampede of wild boars killed three ISIS fighters Sunday who were preparing to ambush anti-ISIS tribesmen in Iraq’s al-Rashad region.
At least eight ISIS fighters took cover in some dense reeds in the area, likely disturbing the wild boars, which then attacked them and killed three ISIS members, injuring the other five. The boars are notorious for being easily disturbed and short-tempered, Newsweek reported.
The bodies of the ISIS fighters were discovered by refugees trying to get away from the violence after ISIS took control of Hawija, a nearby town. Local Kurdish fighters also confirmed the boar attack.
“Three fighters from ISIL were near the Peshmerga checkpoint in al-Rashad. They met some feral boars and the boars killed the three fighters,” Kirkuk Kurdish intelligence head Brigadier Azad Jelal said, Newsweek reported.
The attack came after 25 civilians attempting to leave the Hawija area were massacred by ISIS. ISIS later began killing pigs in the area, according to Iraqi news site Al-Sumeria, Newsweek reported.
“We know that a massacre took place in Hawija district through our sources,” leader Sheik Anwar al-Assi told The Times of London. “This will not be ISIS’s last massacre against citizens.”
ISIS currently has control over less than 7 percent of Iraq, down from 45 percent in 2014, Newsweek said. Part of Mosul and small pockets of Kirkuk are the last parts of Iraq under ISIS’s control.
Twitter users were downright gleeful in contemplating wild boars killing ISIS members.
