WSJ Reviewing All Stories by Fired Reporter Jay Solomon

The Wall Street Journal is now going back and reviewing hundreds of stories written by reporter Jay Solomon who was fired after possible business dealings with one of his key sources emerged.

Solomon, the paper’s chief foreign affairs correspondent, reportedly was offered a 10 percent stake in a fledgling company, Denx LLC, by Farhad Azima, an Iranian-born aviation magnate who has ferried weapons for the CIA, according to The Associated Press.

Those dealings were detailed in an investigative article focussing on Azima published earlier this week. Solomon was fired on Wednesday.

The AP obtained a series of emails and text messages between the two men, as well as a 2015 operating agreement for Denx, which reportedly listed a stake for Solomon.

The Wall Street Journal said it was dismayed by his actions and poor judgment.

“The allegations raised by this reporting are serious. While our own investigation continues, we have concluded that Mr. Solomon violated his ethical obligations as a reporter, as well as our standards,” said a WSJ statement.

“He has not been forthcoming with us about his actions or his reporting practices, and he has forfeited our trust. Mr. Solomon is no longer employed by The Wall Street Journal.”

Solomon told the AP he made mistakes in his reporting and had entered a world he didn’t understand.

“I never entered into any business with Farhad Azima, nor did I ever intend to. But I understand why the emails and the conversations I had with Mr. Azima may look like I was involved in some seriously troubling activities. I apologize to my bosses and colleagues at the Journal, who were nothing but great to me.”

The Wall Street Journal said it would be conducting reviews of hundreds of articles written by Solomon during his time with the publication.

According to The New York Times, the review will be led by Karen Miller Pensiero, who oversees WSJ newsroom standards.
