Zombie Apocalypse Discussed by Canadian Parliament to Roars of Laughter

By    |   Friday, 15 February 2013 08:44 AM EST

The Canadian Parliament was forced into being proactive on the possibility of a zombie invasion from America when one member addressed the issue on the House of Commons floor on Wednesday.

Winnipeg Parliament Member Pat Martin warned fellow officials that if zombies were popping up in America, Canadians needed to take proper measures to prepare. The roars of laughter in the chamber grow as the short speech progresses.

Martin's concerns came a day after a hoaxer hacked into a Montana television broadcast to warn that the "the bodies of the dead are rising from the dead and attacking the living." The message accompanied a scrolling blue bar at the top of the screen listed "counties/areas" surrounding the city that were affected.

"I don’t need to tell you, Mr. Speaker, that zombies don’t recognize borders and that a zombie invasion in the United States can easily turn into a continent-wide pandemic if it’s not contained," Martin said on the Parliament floor.

Martin then asked Minister of Foreign Affairs John Baird whether he was working with Americans to develop a counterinsurgency plan so "that a zombie invasion does not turn into a zombie apocalypse."

Also according to reports, Canadian emergency management officials actually had plans to simulate a zombie apocalypse next week, but the staged event has been canceled. Martin wanted to know that the speaker had another contingency plan in the works to replace the necessary training.

The logic behind the training was to use something that can never actually occur, as opposed to a flood or an ice storm, to ensure emergency-preparedness officials can come up with new solutions to unprecedented threats, The Associated Press reported.

After many complaints from Canadians that the training was wasteful government spending, Public Security Minister Stephane Bergeron issued a change of plans: The new simulation will be a flood.

Despite that, officials are abandoning zombie emergency training, creating a loophole in national security, Baird did his best to quash rising fears as best he could Wednesday.

"I want to say categorically to this member and through him to all Canadians that under the leadership of this prime minister, Canada will never become a safe haven for zombies. Ever!" he said.
