Piers Morgan, the former CNN anchor, has been hired by Britain's Daily Mail Online to serve as
Editor-at-Large for the United States. He will also pen opinion articles "several times each week," according to a statement released by the paper.
"As Editor-at-Large (U.S.) I plan on breaking down the biggest stories that matter to Americans and analyzing them in a way that will generate discussion and create debate," Morgan, 49, said in a statement.
A journalist and commentator for more than 25 years, Morgan said the online version of the newspaper "is an addictive pleasure" that "offers an extraordinarily wide and diverse range of stories from all around the world. It’s become my first stop for news each morning and multiple times throughout the day."
In addition to the weekly column, Morgan will host Piers Morgan’s Life Stories on the British television channel ITV and will be "pursuing new television ventures" in the U.S., reports The Daily Mail.
Morgan has written a weekly column for the Mail's Sunday paper since 2004.
Three years after he began filling in for Larry King, Morgan officially left CNN in March after his prime-time show was canceled due to low ratings.
The British writer often used his CNN program as a platform to lobby for tighter gun-control measures and frequently got into screaming matches with guests. He continued to lambaste the nation's gun control laws throughout his time at CNN, including his last show in which he claimed the gun lobby "has bullied this nation's politicians into cowardly, supine silence. Even when 20 young children are blown away in their classrooms,"
according to USA Today.
In an interview with
The New York Times, Morgan conceded that "we have taken a bath in the ratings.
He also acknowledged that his outspoken and controversial opinions on gun control contributed to the show's demise.
“Look, I am a British guy debating American cultural issues, including guns, which has been very polarizing, and there is no doubt that there are many in the audience who are tired of me banging on about it,” he said.
Morgan was fired from the British tabloid, The Mirror, in 2004 amid a scandal involving the paper's publication of fake photos that purported to show Iraqi prisoners being abused by British soldiers,
according to the New York Daily News.
