PETA Not Howling Over Obama's Dog-Eating Jokes

By    |   Tuesday, 01 May 2012 03:29 PM EDT

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) says it's not upset with jokes about eating dogs that President Barack Obama made at Saturday’s White House Correspondents Association dinner, The Hill reports.

Obama made several references in comments at the dinner to eating dog meat as a child with his stepfather in Indonesia, a story that he told in his book “Dreams From My Father.” Referring to his youth, Obama said, “that is pretty rough, but I can take it, because my stepfather always told me it is a boy-eats-dog world out there.”

Obama also said at one point, “What’s the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull? A pit bull is delicious.” That was a play on a joke former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin told as a vice-presidential candidate in 2008. “They say the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull is lipstick,” she said.

In a statement to The Hill, PETA wrote, “President Obama’s joke was obviously a play on Sarah Palin’s well-known hockey mom/pit bull joke and isn’t indicative of his love for dogs as family members.”
