The National Rifle Association has released an advertising campaign costing more than a million dollars that supports Republican Gov. Scott Walker in his re-election bid against Democratic challenger Mary Burke.
The effort includes a 30-second spot that encourages Wisconsinites to "vote like your safety depends on it" in backing Walker — and a website built by the association that touts the first-term governor's "A+" rating.

"It happens like that," a female's voice says in the commercial just after an intruder breaks into a resident's home at night. "The police can't get there in time.
"Self-defense is up to you when it matters the most," the voice continues — noting that Walker has "protected your right to self-defense."
"Protect your gun rights," the voice says as the commercial ends. "Vote for Scott Walker."
The website lists several reasons for Walker's top NRA rating, including his signing "right-to-carry" legislation into law, his support for bills that protect law-abiding citizens to protect and defend themselves and their families and that encourage recruiting gun hunters and trappers.
Walker, 46, who in 2012 became the first governor in U.S. history to survive a recall campaign, also opposes the 48-hour waiting period on handgun purchases, according to the site.
His opponent, Burke, 55, is a former executive for Trek Bicycle Corp. who served two years as state commerce secretary.
The NRA's effort is focused on several communities in northern Wisconsin, the
Madison Capital-Times reports.
"The five million men and women of the National Rifle Association are committed to electing people who will support and defend the Second Amendment," Chris Cox, chairman of the NRA's Political Victory Fund, said in a news release quoted by the newspaper.
"Scott Walker has a proven record of supporting our constitutional freedoms and has signed into law legislation that is making Wisconsinites safer by protecting their right to self-defense," Cox said.
