Thursday, 15 August 2013 11:49 AM EDT

A German tourist swimming off a Maui beach has lost an arm in a shark attack.

Hawaii media report the woman, who was in her 20s, was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition after she was attacked Wednesday afternoon. The Honolulu Star-Tribune reports her right arm appeared to have been severed below the shoulder.

Two of her friends and a kayaker helped her to shore.

Helicopters were sent over the coastline to check for the shark, according to the newspaper.
