George Zimmerman Arrested, Accused of Aiming Shotgun at Girlfriend

Monday, 18 November 2013 02:16 PM EST

George Zimmerman, the Florida man acquitted of murder in the shooting of unarmed black teenager Trayvon Martin, was arrested Monday on charges of pointing a shotgun at his girlfriend during an argument, Sheriff's deputies said.

Chief Deputy Dennis Lemma said Monday during a press conference in Sanford, Fla., that Zimmerman was charged with aggravated assault, battery and criminal mischief after the dispute at the home the couple shared.

Lemma said no one was hurt, and no one else was at the home when deputies arrived before 1 p.m.

Deputies say Zimmerman had barricaded himself inside by wedging furniture against the door before officers arrived. His girlfriend, Samantha Scheibe, was outside the home and gave deputies a key to get inside.

Lemma says once deputies got inside, Zimmerman did not resist and was not armed. He says investigators hope to search the home for any weapons.

The  arrest was just the latest legal trouble for the former neighborhood watch volunteer, who was acquitted earlier this year of all charges in the fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin.

Zimmerman and his estranged wife, Shellie Zimmerman, were involved in a domestic dispute in September. He was questioned by police after his wife called 911 accusing him of threatening her with a gun.

Police said no charges were filed against either of them because of a lack of evidence.

That dispute took place just days after Shellie Zimmerman filed divorce papers.

Zimmerman, a former neighborhood watch captain, was acquitted on July 13 of murdering Martin as the 17-year-old walked back to the townhouse where he was staying after buying snacks at a nearby convenience store.

Zimmerman said he shot Martin in February 2012 in self defense.
