Former Fox News anchor Gretchen Carlson, whose lawsuit alleging sexual harassment led to the resignation of Roger Ailes on Thursday, thanked the women who "decided to also come forward" to disclose allegations against the network's founding chief executive.

Here's what Carlson, 50, who filed the suit on July 6, said on Twitter:

Ailes, 76, will remain as a consultant to the cable network through 2018, 21st Century Fox said. His resignation was immediate.

Rupert Murdoch, 85, executive chairman of News Corporation, took over as chairman and acting CEO of the Fox News Channel and the Fox Business Network, the company said.

21st Century Fox began an inquiry after Carlson's lawsuit was filed — and 10 more women reportedly came forward to disclose similar incidents involving Ailes.

New York magazine reported Tuesday that anchor Megyn Kelly told investigators that Ailes harassed her when she was a reporter at the network 10 years ago.

Ailes, who founded Fox News Channel in 1996, has denied harassing both Carlson and Kelly.
