President Donald Trump's lawyer Jay Sekulow ran a religious nonprofit that is now under investigation in which one of his own teenage sons was named director and earned nearly a million dollars, The Daily Beast reported on Monday.
The charity, Christian Advocates Serving Evangelism (CASE), is being probed by authorities in New York and North Carolina following reports that Sekulow himself, as well as several others in his immediate family and businesses where they hold senior roles, received more than $60 million from the nonprofit.
The Guardian reported last week that CASE led an aggressive telemarketing campaign which repeatedly pressured poor Christians to donate. The telemarketers, reading from a prepared script, warned those they called that "Islamic extremists are headed in your direction, and you are most likely the main target" and that the donations would go toward preserving "our traditional Christian values."
Tax documents show more than $886,000 of those donations from CASE and its related groups was paid out over 12 years in his role as director to Logan Sekulow, Jay's son, who first fulfilled the position when he was only 18 and had no experience other than an internship at Nickelodeon, according to the Daily Beast.
A Sekulow spokesperson told The Guardian the nonprofit's payouts were all legal.
"The financial arrangements between [sister nonprofit American Center for Law and Justice], Case and all related entities are regularly reviewed by outside independent compensation experts and have been determined to be reasonable," spokesperson Gene Kapp said.
"In addition, each entity has annual independent outside audits performed by certified public accounting firms. Further, the IRS has previously conducted audits of the ACLJ and Case and found them to be in full compliance of all applicable tax laws."
