Vice President-elect Mike Pence will take the oath of office on former President Ronald Reagan's family Bible opened to the same passage Reagan did.
Both Reagan and Pence share the same favorite verse, 2 Chronicles 7:14, which reads: "If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land."
Reagan used his family Bible when sworn in as California governor and as president, CBN News reports. In at least one of those ceremonies, the Bible was open to 2 Chronicles 7:14.
Pence quoted the verse several times on the campaign trail as Donald Trump's running mate, but did not at the time know it was his hero Reagan's favorite verse as well.
Pence is the first person since Reagan to use the Bible for a swearing-in ceremony, The Daily Caller reports. Trump will use Abraham Lincoln's Bible and the Bible his mother gave him as a child.
"President Ronald Reagan placed his faith in a loving God and the goodness of our country," Pence said in a prepared statement. "He set out to change a nation and in doing so, he changed the world. In the march of history, Ronald Reagan's time in office was limited, but his legacy inspired a generation and will continue beyond."
