Amid the charred homes and forest in the Gatlinburg, Tenn. fires is a statue of Jesus standing intact in an otherwise burned-out house.
CNN cites a local news report that shows the statue in the middle of the blackened remains of a home in Sevier County, Tenn. The soot- and ash-covered statue seemed to be in good condition.
That's not the only religious item found in the fires' wreckage this week. An employee at an amusement park that had been evacuated found a burned page from a Bible under a bench there. The passage that was completely readable on the page read:
"O LORD, to thee will I cry: for the fire hath devoured the pastures of the wilderness, and the flame hath burned all the trees of the field."
According to WBIR, seven people have died in the fires that have torched nearly 20,000 acres.
Thousands of people have been forced to evacuate because of the fires burning through the Great Smoky Mountains. Singer Dolly Parton is from the region and is forming a fund to help provide victims of the fires $1,000 a month.
