Women's Group Urges CBS to Pick Female News Anchor

Women's Group Urges CBS to Pick Female News Anchor

A women's group, founded by Jane Fonda and Gloria Steinem, is demanding CBS News hire a female to replace Scott Pelley as anchor of its evening news broadcast, The Hill reports.

The Women's Media Center has launched a petition calling on the news network to put a woman in the anchor's job. More than 1,000 people have already signed the petition.

"For most of television history, the anchors of the weekday evening network newscasts —  ABC, CBS, NBC — have been men. In fact, only two women, Katie Couric and Diane Sawyer, have ever been solo anchors," the group said.

"This week, CBS News announced that Couric's replacement, Scott Pelley, is done as the 'CBS Evening News' anchor. It's time for the network to close the gender gap in nightly news and choose a woman to be the next anchor."

It noted there are a number of women qualified for the job, including Gayle King of CBS, Dana Bash of CNN and Andrea Mitchell of NBC.

It's 2017, long past time to have at least one woman anchoring the weekday evening network news, the group said.

To gain support, the women's group has been using the hashtag #HireHer.
