Donald Trump has his dream candidate to oppose in 2020 and he is not keeping it a secret. Literally hours after ultra-left-wing Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) made her presidential aspirations official last Saturday, Trump’s tweeting began.
He gleefully announced he would see her on the “TRAIL.” It was an apparent back-handed mockery of her claim to Cherokee heritage and the infamous Trail of Tears. Trump has jokingly referred to the former professor as Pocahontas.
In the president’s view, Warren is damaged goods.
A columnist in her hometown newspaper, The Boston Globe, dismissed her candidacy as the entire Cherokee matter unraveled: “With latest revelation, Elizabeth Warren can’t beat Donald Trump.”
The feisty chief executive has not made the Massachusetts senator’s political life easy. In fact, he has singlehandedly put her dream of being president on the endangered species list. He even bullied Warren through the media to release a DNA test last fall.
But it is Warren herself that fell on the proverbial sword. She dodged the question for years. Her answers were deceitful and brought into question her honesty and integrity. The question of her ancestry became more about her personal character.
But the president may never see his dream candidate make the grade. Last week The Washington Post delivered what may be a death blow to her candidacy. They found solid proof the senator had indeed filled out an application in the 1980’s to join the Texas bar describing herself as an American Indian.
That prompted her to apologize to the Cherokee Nation which was not well received. The public relations stunt fell flat. However, she is way out in front on the apology tour.
As Warren’s political fortunes continue to fade, presidential hopeful Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) has begun to take over the media coverage and fundraising dollars. Harris raised over $1.5 million dollars in her first 24 hours as a candidate.
Warren’s misfortunes are helpful to her rivals that now include liberal Democratic senator, Minnesota’s Amy Klobuchar.
At a recent press conference, the inevitable question of whether she’d drop out of the race was raised. Warren carefully avoided the question, but the future looks bleak and the media and her opponents won’t let her problems die; that includes the tweeting Donald Trump.
