Taking vitamin supplements first thing in the morning may seem like second nature, but you’ll have better results if you wait and have breakfast first.

Three health resources weigh in on the best time to take vitamins:

Livestrong.com recommends taking vitamin and mineral supplements in the evening after dinner because that’s when you typically consume the largest meal of the day. However, if you have a glass of wine with dinner, you may want to take vitamins with breakfast because alcohol interferes with the absorption process.

Newhealthguide.org suggests taking supplements in the morning within 30 minutes of eating breakfast. The website says a breakfast that includes calcium, protein, and fruit will help your body better absorb the vitamins. Taking B12 and C vitamins close to bedtime is discouraged because they have stimulating effects and can disrupt sleep patterns.

However, the website acknowledges that those who take a large amount of supplements may need to split the vitamins into morning and evening doses. For example, calcium impedes the body’s ability to absorb iron, so calcium supplements and iron supplements shouldn’t be taken together. Vitamin C, on the other hand, is a good complement to iron and aids absorption of the mineral, so Newhealthguide recommends you take those two supplements together.

Netdoctor.com suggests taking vitamins in the mornings each day with breakfast so you will develop a consistent routine and don’t miss doses. But the website says taking supplements any time of the day is fine, as long as it’s during a meal and not on an empty stomach. Taking vitamins, particularly water-soluble B and C vitamins, on an empty stomach is ineffective because they will quickly move through the body and pass in the urine. Fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K) are stored in the body for up to 24 hours.
