Euthanasia, often also referred to as assisted suicide or death with dignity, is a topic that incites strong feelings that aren’t always black and white, even among Christians.
For Christians, euthanasia can be especially controversial, and different denominations have varying views on the matter. Some consider it a violation of “Thou shalt not kill” and believe anyone who assists in such an act is guilty of murder.

According to the Death with Dignity National Center, some faiths find Christian euthanasia acceptable, but certain rules may apply. Here are eight of the most liberal denominations who have spoken out about the issue:
Evangelicals
In general, the National Association of Evangelicals opposes euthanasia, but in situations where its members are suffering with a terminal illness and death seems inevitable, medical life support can be withdrawn to allow a “natural death,” DDNC said. The NAE recommends pain management and emotional and spiritual support.
Methodists
The Methodist belief stands on the grounds that it’s up to the individual to make his/her own choice when it comes to euthanasia.
According to ProCon.org, some Methodist conferences have encouraged legislation that supports physician-assisted dying.
Unitarian Universalist
As with the Methodists, this denomination believes in self-determination. They do not believe in the prosecution of those who assist
as long as the wishes of the dying patient have been respected and honored, ProCon.org said.

United Church of Christ
This denomination believes in individual freedom when it comes to euthanasia. “It has not asserted that hastened dying is the Christian position, but
the right to choose is a legitimate Christian decision,” ProCon reported.
The Episcopalian Unitarian, Methodist Church (West Coast only), Presbyterian, and Quaker denominations also have liberal policies, according to the DDNC.
Allowing euthanasia, even in specific circumstances, within Christian religions is a delicate matter, as most of the predominant religions, such as Catholicism, adamantly oppose it. The Salvation Army, part of the universal Christian church, opposes Christian euthanasia, the DDNC said, and the church states, “Only God is sovereign over life and death.”
