While Hawaii has approximately 105,242 small businesses — which employ 28,822 people — the Aloha State's government is still considered to be its top employer. The rest of the top five employers range from the military to nonprofit healthcare to a cornerstone of Hawaiian tourism.

Here are Hawaii’s top five employers.

1. The state of Hawaii itself is considered to be one of the largest employers on the islands.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 51,373 people were employed full-time by the state in 2013.

Another 20,425 people worked part-time in state government positions at the time of the survey. The field of education has the most employees on the state’s payroll.

2. The U.S. military has several installations located on the islands. Approximately 4 percent of the state’s population — 47,410 — is employed as military personnel. This does not include those working in the civilian sector, To-Hawaii.com reported.

3. The University of Hawaii has more than 8,000 employees spanning its 10 campuses on four islands.

UH was officially named a university in 1920, growing from a small college of agriculture and mechanical arts. More than 1 million students have attended UH for college credit since its founding.

4. Hawaii Pacific Health is home to 5,809 employees in the state and Hawaii Business ranked it as one of the top 250 Hawaiian companies "based on gross sales."

But HPH is a nonprofit healthcare network that prides itself on serving the people of Hawaii.

5. Hawaiian Holdings, Inc., which is the parent company of Hawaiian Airlines, employs 5,249 people in the state, according to Yahoo.

Hawaiian Holdings is based in Honolulu and transports cargo and passengers across the globe.

According to MarketWatch, Hawaiian Airlines has been a successful venture for the company. In 2013, the airline was ranked third in the top 10 airlines in the U.S.

In 2014, Hawaiian Holdings, Inc. celebrated its 10 millionth passenger of the year, setting a new annual record. Undoubtedly, a banner year for a company that waited nearly 40 years to say aloha to 10 million travelers, in 1967, MarketWatch reported.
