What Is the Rapture?

Thursday, 19 May 2011 11:24 AM EDT ET

The Rapture, as described in the Bible and believed by most followers of Christianity, refers to the Second Coming of Christ when He will remove all Christians from the Earth before Tribulation.

Tribulation occurs, according to Christians, following the Rapture, and will be the time when God exacts judgment on non-believers.

Books in the Bible that detail Revelation and the end-times include Revelation, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Daniel, Ezekiel, the Gospels, Zechariah, Zephaniah, Joel, 1 Corinthians, and Thessalonians.

The following is a specific Biblical passage referring to the end-times:

“For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever.” 1 Thessalonians 4: 16-17
