Owning a gun is a huge responsibility. It’s an even bigger responsibility when you are a girl with a gun who also happens to be a mom.

Here are six tips specific for moms that are packing heat:

1. First and foremost: Know and employ Cooper’s Rules for Safety. These not only apply to girls with guns, but to everyone that owns and handles a firearm.

a) Every gun is ALWAYS loaded.
b) Keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to fire.
c) Never point the gun at anything you are not willing to destroy.
d) Know your target and what is beyond it.

2. If you are going to keep a gun in the home, you should also own and use a safe. Keeping your firearm locked up away from unauthorized persons when you aren’t carrying it is a must.

3. Don’t hide loaded guns around the house. It is especially dangerous when there are kids in the home. Kids are, by nature, curious and like to test our boundaries. Do not tempt them.

4. If you are going to make the decision to be a girl with a gun who happens to be a mom, the only 100 percent sure way to make sure that only you — and not your children — have access to your carry gun is to carry on-body only. While there are manufacturers that make purses just for this purpose, they probably aren't the best option available to moms who have kids underfoot.

5. Familiarize yourself with the NRA’s Eddie Eagle Program, which helps moms teach their children about firearms safety. And anyone can teach it, including you, as the parent.

6. Take a firearms course (or several) yourself. One of the best ways to keep your kids safe around firearms is for you to have all the knowledge you possibly can about firearm safety and proficiency.

Girls with guns who are also moms can never be too safe. Arm yourself with all the knowledge that you can about firearm safety, especially where children are concerned.
