Green coffee extract is the subject of a number of scientific studies that have examined its benefits in helping with long-term health ailments. Some studies seem to indicate that the supplement could be beneficial for those suffering from Alzheimer's disease.

According to WebMD, "green coffee beans are coffee beans that have not yet been roasted. The roasting process of coffee beans reduces amounts of the chemical chlorogenic acid. Therefore, green coffee beans have a higher level of chlorogenic acid compared to regular, roasted coffee beans."

Current Alzheimer's research suggests that the ailment is a metabolic disease linked to insulin responsiveness. Some research links green coffee bean extract to an improved insulin resistance in mice. A 2014 study published in the Journal of Evidence Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine showed that decaffeinated green coffee bean extract could reverse the insulin resistance brought on by a high fat diet.

Chlorogenic acid is known to have several other health benefits including weight loss, heart disease and diabetes. A 2008 study in the Journal of Nutrition found good results when researchers examined how easily humans were able to absorb and metabolize the chlorogenic acid from green coffee extract.

Regular coffee appears to have the potential to help with Alzheimer's disease, as well. The Journal of Toxicological Research published a study in 2011 that showed a review of literature that the caffeine in regularly consumed coffee seemed to show a certain protection against Alzheimer's disease.

Other studies point directly at the coffee, not the caffeine. Research in the Journal Age showed that while coffee helped aging rats with cognitive and motor skills, caffeine alone did not have the same effect.
