Green coffee bean extract has been the subject of various studies as scientists analyze its potential benefits in helping those struggling with diabetes.

According to the Mayo Clinic
, type 2 diabetes is a "chronic condition that affects the way your body metabolizes sugar (glucose)." The body either resists the effects of insulin or doesn't produce enough of it.

Some studies have been conducted to illustrate the positive effect of coffee and the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. One study, in particular, looked at over 17,000 Dutch men and women and showed evidence that the consumption of large amounts of coffee (seven cups or more a day) could "substantially" reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Green coffee bean extract, however, is an unroasted coffee bean which contains a higher level of an antioxidant known as chlorogenic acid. According to WebMD, chlorogenic acid in green coffee is thought to have several health benefits for heart disease, diabetes and weight loss.

In 2014, the Journal of Molecular and Cellular Biochemisty published a report that looked at the effects of chlorogenic acid, caffeine and coffee on diabetic rats. The study showed that green coffee bean extract could possibly help prevent brain disorders connected with diabetes. It also seemed to decrease anxiety and improve memory, better than just coffee or caffeine alone.

Another study done in 2007, published in the Journal of International Medical Research showed that chlorogenic acid enriched instant coffee could potentially reduce the absorption of glucose in obese people.

Likewise, a 2014 study published online in the Journal of Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine found some evidence that green coffee bean extract could help improve insulin resistance in mice. In this study, experts used green coffee bean extract prepared from decaffeinated and unroasted coffee beans, "making it a novel source of chlorogenic acid and eliminating the possible side effects of caffeine." The study showed mice that were given a high fat diet had a reversal of insulin resistance. They also saw a reduction in fat accumulation in the mice.

While experts continue to experiment and analyze the potential benefits of green coffee bean extract on diabetes and weight loss, researchers suggests more studies be conducted before firmly recommending the extract for treating serious health conditions.
