President Herbert Hoover was the 31st president of the United States. There are several memorials to this president who had a tough time in his tenure, but was able to find success as a long-term public servant.

Though Herbert Hoover was known as the "Great Humanitarian," he also had the great misfortune of being president at the beginning on what would become the Great Depression of the 1930s.

According to the White House
, he was "unfairly painted" as a "callous and cruel president" during his time in office and became a "scapegoat for the Depression." Hoover did, however, have an extended bout of public service after his presidency and became a help to Presidents Truman and Eisenhower in the 1940s and 1950s.

The Herbert Hoover National Historic Site in Iowa is a memorial to Hoover's youth in that state. Hoover was born in the two-room house, but left after he was orphaned at the age of nine. At the national historic site, visitors can see the small creek where Hoover took his fishing pole as a boy — a past time he enjoyed throughout his life.

Hoover's grave in Cedar Rapids is marked by a simple white slab of marble. He rests alongside his wife Lou Henry. The grave is meant to reflect Quaker ideals.

Another memorial dedicated to Hoover rests at his birthplace. It is a large statue of the goddess Isis. This statue was a gift from the people of Belgium for Hoover's work relieving famine in the country during World War I. All of these memorials as well as The Herbert Hoover Presidential Library & Museum are a part of the national historic site.

Stanford University also has The Herbert Hoover Memorial Building and is home to the Hoover Institution and the Hoover Library/Archives – which houses papers from his humanitarian work before becoming president.

The Hoover Tower is a 285 foot landmark that boasts a 14th floor observation lookout. The tower has a 48 bell carillon. The complex is home to the university's public policy institute.
