The first time one goes to apply for a hunting permit can be a daunting and intimidating experience. The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources (KDFWR) offers something for every sport hunter.
It doesn't hurt to do a little research before heading into a state licensing office or contacting a licensed retailer. Here are four things to know before applying for a hunting permit for adults:

1. Safety Precautions
Anyone wishing to acquire a hunting permit is required to attend a hunter education course. They must present the completion certificate to the licensing authority.
In addition, Kentucky's state regulations require that licensed hunters carry the hunter education certificate on their person while hunting, along with their current hunting license and permits.
2. Exceptions
The only persons exempted from this education requirement are landowners and their tenants engaged in hunting on private lands. In addition, all prospective hunters may purchase a one-time hunter education exemption permit valid for 12 consecutive months.
They must be accompanied by a supervising adult licensed hunter while hunting. Children under age 12 may also hunt without first acquiring an education certificate, but they too must be supervised by a licensed adult hunter.

3. Online purchasing
The KDFWR offers the ability to purchase licenses and permits directly through the state website. Hunters are provided with printable license images to carry with them. However, the state regulations do not require this.
For those people without access to printing functions, the purchase of licenses and permits provides the hunter with an authorization number referencing their valid and current licenses. When done this way, hunters are required to carry with them the authorization number and their state-issued photo identification or driver's license, or a federal equivalent.
4. Discounted Pricing
Reduced fee hunting licenses are available for residents age 65 and older and those persons who are 50 percent or more disabled. No other discounted prices are offered through the state.
While Kentucky does not offer military discounts, those military personnel who are Kentucky residents and are on furlough are not required to purchase licenses, but simply carry their furlough paperwork with them.
