Gun laws, even in firearm-friendly Idaho, have been a topic of interest for the past few years, especially after the 2012 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School and recent shootings in malls and movie theaters.

In Idaho, the goal is to allow citizens to own guns with little government intervention. It's a pro-gun state, where anyone can own or buy a rifle, handgun, or shotgun without a permit, as long as the individual is at least age 18. Under 18, parental consent must be given for the minor to have a firearm.

Residents in Idaho need only a permit to carry a concealed weapon, and the state recognizes permits from other states. Visitors must carry the permit or license on them.

Gun owners are permitted to openly carry a firearm in their vehicles, but it has to be in plain view, whether loaded or unloaded.

In light of the state's relaxed gun laws, visitors who are gun owners should not be afraid to carry their firearms but should make sure to check regulations anyway before traveling to or through Idaho.

The culture of hunting in Idaho contributes to the state's light gun laws.

As many as 10,000 people sign up for classes on hunting through the Idaho Department of Fish and Game, including Americans and international visitors. Residents and visitors see the pursuit of fishing and hunting in Idaho as being a part of and experiencing the American Frontier.
