Living off the grid may seem like an ideal way to save money, be environmentally conscious, and protect yourself and your family from possible future disasters. If you live in an urban or suburban area, however, it may be difficult for you to live completely off the grid.

1. Choose the right location.
If you can move to a new home, you should choose one in a community without restrictive building codes that is in a sunny location with access to wind, SF Gate Home Guides recommends. Many highly populated cities will not allow you to live off the power grid even if you can find a way to do it, so a more rural location will be preferable.
2. Decide how to power your home.
Solar and wind can generate a significant amount of power for your home, but are expensive and still fall short of the average home’s power consumption. You may need to adapt and use less power in order to make an off-grid system work.
3. Find a way to get water.
Drilling a well and installing a septic tank will handle your water and sewer needs off-grid but involve large expenses, advises Credit Loan. Collecting rainwater also can help with water needs, but won’t give you a source of running water.

4. Figure out how to get rid of trash.
Being off-grid means no garbage collection. Reusing and recycling will reduce trash needs significantly, and the rest will need to be safely stored and transported to the dump yourself.
5. Learn how to farm and garden.
Even most cities will now allow a limited number of animals like goats and chickens to be kept on the property, but you'll have to check your local regulations. Gardening is possible even on limited acreage with careful planting and even in containers if necessary.
6. Rent a post office box.
Being off the grid means not having a street address (or not publicizing it). If you want anonymity or if there is no mail delivery in your area, you can pick up your mail at the nearest post office.
