Magnesium is thought to support everything from bones and muscles to the heartbeat and immune system, and some holistic healers and dietary supplement providers tout the health benefits of magnesium ascorbate. Magnesium ascorbate is commonly marketed as a non-acidic source of vitamin C.

Consumers have long turned to vitamin C to help fight the common cold, and the vitamin may be effective in treating everything from wrinkled skin to stomach ulcers and preventing hardened arteries, according to WebMD.

While most experts recommend a diet high in fruits and vegetables as the preferred source of vitamin C, taking magnesium ascorbate may have benefits.

Both the vitamin C and the mineral appear to be well absorbed when taken in the form of a mineral ascorbate, such as magnesium ascorbate, according to the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University. Because of this high absorption, the institute cautions consumers to be aware of recommended doses of minerals.

According to Dr. Thomas Levy’s website PeakEnergy.com, it is unlikely for an overdose of this type of supplement to occur. The supplement may be effective in reversing damage caused by excess calcium and is considered as a treatment for osteoporosis, the website said. Magnesium also is thought to be depleted from food sources because of agricultural and food processes, according to the Weston A. Price Foundation.

Magnesium deficiency can contribute to everything from depression, loss of appetite and headaches to abnormal heart rhythms and fibromyalgia, according to Metabolics, a dietary supplement provider in the United Kingdom.

According to DrSircus.com: “Massive magnesium deficiencies in the general population have led to a tidal wave of sudden coronary deaths, diabetes, strokes and cancer. Even a mild deficiency of magnesium can cause increased sensitivity to noise, nervousness, irritability, mental depression, confusion, twitching, trembling, apprehension, and insomnia.”
