Memory loss or forgetfulness is a common part of aging. While some lapses in memory are normal, the
National Institute on Aging says a progression to a more serious concern is referred to as "Mild Cognitive Impairment."
Researchers have discovered that it can take over a decade for dementia to fully develop. Because of this extended time it is important to consult with a doctor if memory problems are bothering you.

It is also important to understand that "remembering things" is not the only sign of memory loss. Disorientation, following directions and keeping track of conversations can also be an indication of memory issues.
Here are seven signs your forgetfulness is something more serious:
1. Problems with words: This includes using the wrong name for familiar items or not remembering words for common things.
2. Not recognizing places that should be familiar: A person who gets lost in familiar surroundings, or feels disoriented in a place they have been many times could be experiencing serious memory loss.
3. Having trouble in conversations: This could include asking the same question repeatedly or simply having problems tracking the course of a conversation. This also applies to having problems following the plot of movies, books or TV shows.

4. Personal care problems: If a person starts showing poor hygiene, they could be experiencing a memory problem. This includes all types of personal care, as well as personal safety issues and eating.
5. Getting lost in time: A problem following time that can't be alleviated by using calendars or other schedules could indicate a serious memory problem.
6. Inability to follow directions: Not being able to follow all the steps of a recipe or not being able to do tasks that require several steps could be a sign of serious memory problems. The inability to balance a checkbook or pay bills is something the
Alzheimer's Association points to as a sign of a potentially serious memory loss issue.
7. Losing things: While misplacing items can happen to anyone, the
Mayo Clinic suggests that putting things in inappropriate places could be a sign of a more serious memory problem. For example, placing your car keys inside the refrigerator or a wallet inside a kitchen drawer.
