It is an established fact that aging cannot be stopped. However, it can be made easier by understanding the process and warding off the various misconceptions and myths that come along with it. Here are the top five myths about aging:
1. Senility:
Believe it or not, senility is the biggest concern for many people. However, the fact is that the aging process does not bring about any disability, per se. Mental sharpness and acumen can be equally maintained and witnessed in the aging population.
2. Lack of productivity:
Perhaps the second most prominent myth about the aging process, this myth hypothesizes that as age increases, an individual becomes more withdrawn, inactive, and ceases to be productive. However, the actual aging process certainly does not suggest anything of this sort. In fact, aging gracefully involves increased social interaction and voicing of one’s opinion. There are umpteen known clubs for the aging population, all with vigorous and energizing activities.
3. Retirement:
It is a myth that just because you are over 60 you have to retire.
4. Lost libido:
This is another devastating myth about aging. Loss of libido is certainly not proportional to the number of one’s grey hairs. Members of the aging population experience fabulous sex lives and consider the act a part of aging gracefully. With steady exercise and fitness, aging will certainly not be a barrier to making love.
5. Teeth falling out:
The occurrence of teeth loss is not necessarily inevitable. Teeth loss in the aging population occurs primarily because of gum infections such as periodontitis and gingivitis. A sturdy dental maintenance regime can take care of this problem better than one may imagine!
