National News in Cuba: 6 Ways to Keep Up With Cuba

By    |   Wednesday, 04 November 2015 06:05 PM EST ET

The Cuban government’s strict control of its news coverage has made it difficult for many international news organizations to report the national news in Cuba and attain access to the country’s government officials.

The majority of the news outlets in the country are state-run, such as Granma, Cuba’s official newspaper. A few U.S. news organizations have been able to set up bureaus in the country after receiving approval from both the United States and Cuban governments. But some critics argue the organizations have been able to do so because their news reports have either appeased or not offended Fidel Castro and the members of the communist government.

Despite Cuba’s constraints, many news organizations provide substantial information and up-to-date coverage about the country’s news events.

Here are six news organizations that report the national news in Cuba:

1. 14ymedio.com
The 14ymedio website is an independent, general interest digital newspaper based out of Cuba. It offers daily reports on the news, opinion, sports, and beauty. It was launched by renowned Cuban blogger Yoani Sánchez as a way to promote social change by providing Cubans with essential information. Sanchez’s site is the first major independent general-interest news outlet in five decades. The site was hacked almost as soon as it went up in 2014, and Sanchez accused the Cuban government of using its control over the country’s internet to divert readers from her site.

2. The Miami Herald
The Miami Herald, which is among the top daily newspapers in the country, has been committed to providing a broad spectrum of news and analysis about Cuba’s economy, industries, and politics. It originally put out El Nuevo Herald, which covers Cuba and is now a standalone newspaper.

3. CubaNet
CubaNet is a nonprofit organization based in Miami. It was founded in 1994 to promote free press in Cuba and publishes the work of independent journalists located in the country.

4. Cuba Encuentro
This is the online site for the Cuban Journal Encuentro de la Cultura Cubana and features news about culture, politics, and economics, and opinion pieces.
