For years, Cuba has been off limits for nearly everything from travel to cigars. It was little more than a mysterious island, home to the Castro brothers, which stood for practically everything the U.S. was against. But thanks to the efforts of President Obama, hostile relations between the U.S. and the small country are subsiding and some travel bans have been lifted. However, national news from the island is still often difficult to come by and often published by the Communist Party, meaning most must look to outside news to inform and educate.
Here are eight ways to keep up with national news in Cuba from the U.S.
1. Radio and TV Martí
Since the station’s first broadcast in 1985 Radio Martí has been providing Spanish speakers in both Cuba and U.S. with news ranging from politics to the economy and sports to current events. Listeners can find the station on the radio, online, or via apps.

2. Granma
The most widely circulated and read daily paper in Cuba may be the official publication of the Central Committee of the Cuban Communist Party. Its online edition offers Spanish news on culture, health, the nation, and the world.
3. Cuban News Agency
The Cuban News Agency brings Cuban news to the world via ACN online. News is in four languages, Spanish, English, French and Russian, and includes photos, video, and articles all about what’s happening in the country. News includes culture, sports, economy and science, among others.
4. 14yMedio
This online news site offers news of Cuban and world affairs. There’s an English edition, but the main site is geared toward Spanish-speakers. Reports, interviews, and current news are all available.
5. The Guardian
Winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 2014, The Guardian covers international news for a global audience, and that includes Cuba. The website offers news about sports, politics, and more for those wanting to keep up with what’s happening in the country.
6. The New York Times
Available via delivery or online, this prestigious paper regularly reports on happenings in Cuba, including coverage of the U.S. and Cuba’s talks to restore diplomatic relations and news from Cuba.

7. Radio Havana Cuba
Not just broadcast in Cuba, but in the United States via shortwave and many other countries through streaming broadcasts as well, this is the official, government-run international broadcasting station of Cuba. It covers national and international news and even tourism.

Covering news from all over the Caribbean, this website covers much of the news unfolding in Cuba, including plenty on lifting the U.S. embargo.
