Oscar nominations have been made public today for the 83rd Academy Awards, with The King’s Speech leading the pack having received 12 nominations including best picture, best actor in a leading role, best actress in a leading role, and actor and actress in a supporting role.
An eclectic mix of films was nominated Tuesday for best picture;
Black Swan, The Fighter, Inception, The Kids Are All Right, 127 Hours, The Social Network, Toy Story 3, True Grit, and Winter’s Bone, in addition to
The King’s Speech.
For actor in a leading role, nods were given to Javier Bardem in Biutiful, Jeff Bridges in True Grit, Jesse Eisenberg in The Social Network, Colin Firth in The King’s Speech, and James Franco in 127 Hours.
Five women were nominated for actress in a leading role, but Hollywood insiders predict that it will come down to Annette Bening for
The Kids Are All Right and Natalie Portman for
Black Swan. Both women have previously won golden globes.
Additional female nominees are Nicole Kidman for
Rabbit Hole, Jennifer Lawrence for
Winter’s Bone, and Michelle Williams for
Blue Valentine.
Best supporting actor remains a toss-up between Christian Bale for The Fighter, John Hawkes for Winter’s Bone, Jeremy Renner for The Town, Mark Ruffalo for The Kids Are All Right, and Geoffrey Rush for The King’s Speech.
Nods were giving to supporting actresses Amy Adams, Helena Bonham Carter, Melissa Leo, Hailee Steinfeld, and Jacki Weaver.
Best director nominations reveal an all male cast, with likely favorite David Fincher for The Social Network. Fincher previously won best director at the Globes. Darren Aronofsky for Black Swan, David O. Russell for The Fighter, Tom Hooper for The King’s Speech, and the Coen brothers for True Grit complete the category for directing nominations.
ABC will televise the ceremony live from Hollywood’s Kodak Theatre, Sunday, February 27th.
