In order to understand what happens inside your head and why, it’s important to know the parts of the brain and how they function.

Here are 15 parts of the brain and what they do, according to MDhealth.com:

1. As the largest part of the brain, the cerebrum is responsible for the majority of the brain’s function. The cerebrum has four sections, or lobes, that all have different functions.

2. The frontal lobe controls intellect and creative thought, including problem solving, attention, behavior, physical reactions, movement, smell, and personality.

3. The parietal lobe controls language, reading, sensory and motor cortexes, and internal stimuli.

4. The temporal lobe controls memories, both visual and auditory. It also manages some functions of speech and hearing as well as aspects of behavior.

5. The occipital lobe controls vision and is located at the back of the head.

6. The cerebellum is known as the “little brain” and may have developed earlier than other parts. The cerebellum controls balance, coordination, and posture.

7. The limbic system has different glands that regulate hormones and help convey emotions. The glands reside in different parts of the brain and have important functions.

8. The amygdala regulates responses to emotions, fear, and memories.

9. The hippocampus is used for converting short-term memory into long-term memory and also handles spatial relationships.

10. The thalamus is in the center of the brain and controls attention span and pain signals as well as other sensations the body feels.

11. The brain stem is responsible for basic functions including breathing, blood pressure, and heartbeat. It has three main parts.

12. The midbrain regulates vision, hearing, and body movement.

13. Part of the midbrain called the cerebral peduncle transfers messages from the cerebral cortex down the brain stem, which provides the ability for voluntary motor function.

14. The pons links to the cerebellum and interprets information used for sensory analysis or motor control, and also allows sleep to occur.

15. The medulla is the part of the brain stem that maintains the heart rate, breathing, and other important functions of the body.
