AARP, with over 37 million members, is known as the historic, established retirement organization. Yet in this turbulent, politicized world of health care and retirement changes, many smaller organizations have sprung up to meet dissatisfaction among previous members. One of these groups gaining popularity is the 60 Plus Association.
The 60 Plus Association defines their organization as a “non-partisan seniors advocacy group with a free enterprise, less government less taxes approach to seniors’ issues.” The organization’s top priorities are to eliminate the estate tax and make Social Security viable so it will last for future generations.

The organization has strong memberships in Alabama, Indiana, New York, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee.
On the other hand,
AARP states that they fight for “age 50 and over individuals and their families at the local, state, and national levels” on a variety of issues.
AARP also takes a less political stance when discussing their causes. They state they advocate for positive social change in health care, financial security, and community life and leisure. But the specifics of their stance is less clear, saying they “pioneer[ed] group health insurance for older people” and “champion[ed] Social Security.”
There is little said about 60 Plus Association's membership benefits. On their website, under the Join section, the organization simply states, “thank you for your help and support of the 60 Plus Association. We’re fighting every day for seniors and retirees ... It is people like you have help us continue the fight.”

The AARP has an extensive list of benefits — from car rental discounts to food and entertainment coupons to necessities like life insurance and home care — that they offer to their members.
In comparing the two organizations, a potential member should factor in political views as well as membership goals and expectations. If the member is looking for a more political organization and to support a cause they feel strongly about, then 60 Plus Association is the retirement organization to join.
However, if a member wants an established organization with benefits but also less clear about the organization’s policy beliefs, AARP is a better organization.
