The digestive system is responsible for absorbing nutrients and turning food into energy that fuels the body. Here are eight things you can do to keep the digestive system running smoothly.
1. Drink Water
Dr. Oz says that staying hydrated is one of the most important things you can do for your health, and water makes it easier for food to be digested and waste to pass from the body.

A good sign you are getting enough water is that your urine should be clear at all times of the day.
2. Eat Lots of Fiber
Eating fiber helps keep food moving easily through the digestive system.
Registered dietitian Maria Adams recommends incorporating both soluble and insoluble fiber, since they each have distinct benefits for digestion. Soluble fiber removes excess water from stool while insoluble fiber is not digestible and adds bulk to solid waste.
3. Incorporate Probiotics
Make sure these “good bacteria” are part of your diet for better nutrient absorption, stronger immune system, and more normal bowel movements, says Dr. Oz.
4. Exercise
Dr. Oz points out that 30 minutes of exercise daily is not only important for overall health and maintaining a healthy weight, but it will help speed up digestion and improve blood flow to the organs in the gastrointestinal tract.

5. Eat Slowly
The Gastroenterological Society of Australia explains that the digestive system works more effectively when you eat at a slower pace, chew food thoroughly, and relax while enjoying meals.
6. Stop Smoking
Smoking increases the chance of experiencing acid reflux and heartburn, according to GESA. It also encourages the formation of ulcers.
7. Manage Stress
Adams explains that stress can cause dysfunction in the digestive system. Learn what stress and anxiety-reducing techniques work for you and practice them every day.
8. Limit Alcohol Consumption
Drinking too much alcohol can cause heartburn and ulcers and can also lead to cirrhosis of the liver, warns GESA.
