Veterans can take advantage of travel benefits that include everything from discounted resort stays to free vacations. When planning a trip, it’s a good idea to check with hotel, entertainment, and transportation companies for possible discounts and benefits.

Many travel agencies are too happy to offer affordable excursions and attractions to those people who served our country. Veterans can check travel and military websites to find discounts or even freebies. They may find the most inexpensive and enjoyable trips, whether they’re going on short outings or to such places as Waikiki Beach and Europe.

Here are six travel benefits for veterans:

1. Beneficiary Travel — The program is available to eligible vets through the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Beneficiary Travel provides mileage reimbursement and travel reimbursement for planes, trains, buses, and taxis. The program also includes ambulance and wheelchair van transport to and from VA healthcare services.

2. Veterans Advantage card — Get discounts on hotels, airlines, trains, cruise lines, car rental agencies, and entertainment facilities with a card membership. You can try out a trial membership or choose from annual and biannual memberships, according to USA Today.

3. Space-available air travel — The “Space-A” program can be used at military terminals by military personnel and veterans instead of using commercial airlines. The flights are free when available with only a small fee for the terminal. Space-A travel is for those with flexible schedules who don’t mind flying from one military base to another to reach a destination.

A large condo with kitchen and living room as well as resort amenities may cost as little as $50 a night.

5. Theme parks — Veterans should check with amusement parks and ask about military discounts. Disney offers discounts for vets on rooms at select Disney Resort hotels. It also offers discounts on military promotional tickets at the parks.

6. Vacations for Warriors — This unique Colorado non-profit gives free vacations to soldiers injured in combat. Vacations for Warriors operates with donations that include cash, hotel points, timeshares, and transferable airline miles.
