In 2024, the news media distribution points have changed. Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has decided to end access to news content for all Canadian users.
This decision comes in response to Bill C-18, the Online News Act, which requires tech giants like Meta to pay news outlets for hosting their journalism on their platforms. In recent months, Meta has gradually blocked news content for varying reasons like spam policies, moving them away from being a viable news source.
This move by Facebook/Meta has shown they can have plenty of traffic and money just using other peoples’ photos, family updates, professional posts, intellectual property and copyrights.
With this being said, the impact of Facebook on the voter may be less in 2024 than in 2020, and people must pay META/Facebook to promote anything political going forward. However, since 2020, there have been several new social media companies created that are moderate or conservative which may also affect US Voters. Since 2020, Rumble.com, Gettr, Parler, Gab, and Truth Social have all become fairly large with millions of users.
The ability for voters to access facts, math, and information is much easier in 2024. Many news watchers are turning to platforms like Twitter and Newsmax, abandoning traditional outlets like CBS, NBC, ABC, PBS, NPR, CNN, MSNBC, and other New York media due to perceived fraud, hyperbole, and mistakes in journalism that appear biased towards promoting Democrats and socialists. This shift allows Trump to communicate his message more directly and effectively to an audience that trusts these alternative sources.
