A controversial memo House members have been reviewing for weeks has been secretly altered and is not the same version the White House is currently reviewing, Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., alleged Wednesday.

"It is clear that the Majority made material changes to the version it sent to the White House, which Committee members were never apprised of, never had the opportunity to review, and never approved," Schiff wrote to Rep. Nunes.

The House Intelligence Committee voted Monday to release the document, which accuses the Department of Justice and FBI of misusing their authority to get a secret surveillance order on one of Trump's former campaign aides.

Nunes, the Republican chair of the GOP-majority committee, wrote the memo along with his staff.

Democratic lawmakers have claimed the GOP's focus on the memo is part of a larger Republican effort to discredit the FBI and special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, and FBI Director Christopher Wray on Wednesday issued a public warning to Trump stating the memo omits key information that could impact its validity.

Schiff said Nunes must immediately withdraw the document and hold a new vote.

The panel voted Monday to publicly release the memo, part of a GOP effort to prove improper use of surveillance by the FBI in its Russia investigation. President Donald Trump has five days from the vote to review the document.
