Many Muslims in the United States are "terrified" of telling what they know about potential Islamic terrorism activities, and officials "need to make sure that they understand that we will be with them if they will work with us," former GOP presidential candidate Ben Carson said Sunday in the wake of the deadly shootings at an Orlando gay nightclub.

"They see how tepid our responses are, you know, why are they going to risk their necks?" the retired neurosurgeon told Fox News."If they refuse to work with us, you know, I'm afraid that perhaps some of the darker elements of our nature may take, you know, control of our actions."

The shooter has been identified as Omar Mateen, 29, a U.S. citizen born in Florida. His parents were reportedly from Afghanistan.

Meanwhile, Carson said, it's time for the nation to get "much more serious about the way that we look at potential terrorist activity."

"We need to carefully examine how we are doing things and the political correctness is beyond the pale," said Carson. "Also, look what is happening down at our southern border. We have not been serious about that it's what they call OTMs, or 'other than Mexicans.' They are establishing terrorist cells within our country. Why are they here and what are they waiting for? We have got to get serious about this or we're going to destroy ourselves with our silliness."
