The Boston Globe implored Massachusetts readers on Tuesday to stop Donald Trump from winning the Republican presidential nomination, and to vote for endorsed rival John Kasich because "it's a vote against Donald Trump."
"Stopping Donald J. Trump is imperative — and not just for his fellow Republicans," the Globe's
editorial board declared. "Each votes counts — moreso here than in some other states."
That's because the Bay State's 42 Republican convention delegates will be awarded based on the vote total of each candidate, "even if they don't win."
Massachusetts is among 12 states that hold its primaries or caucuses on Super Tuesday, March 1.
"Voters needn’t fear that their ballot against Trump will go to waste" because "no matter who actually tops the field … the more people vote for one of Trump's opponents, the fewer delegates he’ll receive from Massachusetts," the editorial says.
The Globe then slams the developer for reviving "some of the ugliest traditions in American politics, including the scapegoating of religious minorities and immigrants.
"He has yet to put forth a serious platform of ideas about how he would govern or what a Trump administration would seek to accomplish," the editorial says. "Just his nomination by one of the nation’s major parties would be an international embarrassment."
Kasich, whom the Globe endorsed last month in the New Hampshire primary, is "a mainstream conservative" with some "conservative positions, especially his opposition to abortion rights, understandably make many Massachusetts voters blanch," the newspaper says.
However, being judged against Trump's other supporters, Kasich fares best.
"The best way to stop Trump is to stop Trump now," the editorial says.
