Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump responded to President Barack Obama's assertion that Trump will never be president on Tuesday by saying if he had run four years ago, Obama wouldn't be president today.

Obama reiterated his previous assertion on Trump's future during a Tuesday press conference in California.

Trump shot back during a rally later in the day in Beaufort, South Carolina, according to a Wall Street Journal video of the event.

Trump said Obama has done "a lousy job as president," and listed off several criticisms, including the budgets, spending, the fight against the Islamic State, Obamacare and the borders.

"This man has done such a bad job, he has set us back so far, and for him to say that is actually a great compliment, if you want to know the truth," Trump said.

"You're lucky I didn't run last time when Romney ran because you would have been a one-term president," Trump said, addressing Obama directly.
