CBS Poll: Trump Has Double-Digit Lead Over Entire GOP Pack

Donald Trump is leading the GOP pack in yet another poll released this week, showing that the real estate mogul has solidly secured his position ahead of his nearest rival by double digits.

According to a CBS News poll conducted July 29-Aug. 2 of 1,252 adults, Trump has 24 percent support, ahead of former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush at 13 percent and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker at 10 percent.

The poll found that he is in the lead across a wide range of Republican primary voters, particularly among those who say they are angry at Washington (30 percent).

He also leads among conservatives, tea party supporters, evangelicals, and both men and women, the poll found.

And 79 percent say they think Trump says what he believes, rather than what people want to hear — the highest of any candidate tested in the poll.

Other candidates are trailing Trump by wide margins:
  • Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee at 8 percent
  • Former pediatric neurosurgeon Ben Carson, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz at 6 percent
  • Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul at 4 percent
  • New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie at 3 percent
Other contenders have less than 3 percent support.

On the issues, Trump does best on the economy and illegal immigration, CBS News said, while Bush scores most highly when it comes to dealing with America's adversaries.

Trump and Bush are seen as the candidates most likely to win a general election, the poll found. Twenty-six percent say Trump has the best chance of winning next year, while 23 percent say Bush has the best chance. Walker is in third place with 8 percent saying he will likely be the nominee.

The CBS News poll is the fourth national poll out this week giving Trump a commanding lead in the race for the presidency.

On Monday, a Fox News poll and a Monmouth University poll both have him leading by a margin of 2-to-1.

And a Bloomberg poll out on Tuesday showed Trump leading by double digits, with 21 percent support compared to 10 percent for Bush.

Meanwhile, Tuesday marks the final deadline to determine which candidates will participate in the first debate on Thursday hosted by Fox News; the debate will feature only the top 10 candidates in the average of the five most recent national polls released as of 5:00 p.m.

According to Politico, former Texas Gov. Rick Perry appears to be the most high profile politician who will miss the cutoff to participate.
