Donald Trump told Newsmax TV on Tuesday that he was saddened that San Antonio police officers were told that they had violated city policies when they donned "Make America Great Again" baseball caps and posed with the Republican candidate last week.

"I was so sad to hear it — and you could imagine if they put on a crooked Hillary hat, they would have been just fine," Trump told "The Joe Pags Show" in an interview. "It's so sad to hear it."

Members of the San Antonio Police Department and the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office wore the red caps and posed with Trump during his campaign stop last Tuesday.

Trump posted video with the officers on Twitter.

San Antonio Mayor Ivy Taylor, who is nonpartisan though a registered Democrat, said that the officers lacked "judgment."

Police Chief William McManus said that the officers "wearing the campaign hats while in uniform violated SAPD policy and will be disciplined appropriately."

Trump slammed Taylor for reprimanding the officers on social media.

"She should be ashamed of herself," he told Pags. "These are incredible people. I did meet them — and they put it on for a second.

"I did just a quick photo shoot.

"I did meet them. They're incredible people, incredibly brave people — and for her to be criticizing them, she should be ashamed of herself."
