Trump: House Needs a 'Very Much Tougher Voice' as Speaker

MSNBC's "Morning Joe."
Donald Trump said Friday he doesn't want to get overly involved in the ongoing battle for the House speaker's seat, but he does believe a "very much tougher voice" is needed.

"There's so many things the Republicans could do if they knew how to negotiate and had some unity," the GOP front-runner told MSNBC's "Morning Joe" program. "So many times you'll have people out there but they have no backing from the rest of the party."

On Thursday, Trump told a Las Vegas audience that he'd been credited for getting House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy to decide against seeking the speaker's seat.

Friday, he commented that he thought McCarthy's comments about the House Benghazi committee's influence on Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign were "a disaster."

But he didn't have any names he wanted to suggest Friday to replace current House Speaker John Boehner, who announced his resignation last month.

"There seems to be a little bit of unification around Paul Ryan, who is a good guy but I would say that I have four or five people that I would have in mind that are tough people that a lot of people wouldn't be thinking of," Trump said. "I don't think they would have much of a chance but I think they would do a good job."

But he said he does not see the chaos in the House as a huge issue for the GOP presidential race.

"I think that we are who we are," said Trump. "We're out campaigning. There's now 16 of us left. That's a lot of people with one left and another one is going to be leaving pretty soon from what I hear and probably a lot will be leaving soon but we're a little bit on our own. We're in our own orbit."

At first, Trump wouldn't say exactly who he thinks is leaving, and then admitted that he thinks that Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul will be out of the race.

"I think he has to go back to the people of Kentucky," he said. "I think they're not being treated fairly by him and he's going to have to do one thing or the other. I don't think it's fair to the people of Kentucky. A great state and great people. I don't think it's fair to them."

But Trump said he does know one thing for sure — the person leaving the race isn't him.

"I'm never getting out," he told the program.
