Republican Donald Trump debated the presidential debate moderator Monday, telling NBC News' Lester Holt he was wrong to say a federal judge had ruled stop-and-frisk police tactics unconstitutional.
The case went before an anti-police judge, Trump said. "It was taken away from her, and our mayor, our new mayor, refused to go forward with the case. They would have won on appeal."
Holt told Trump that the argument against the policy is that it is a form of racial profiling.
"No, the argument is we have to take the guns away from people that are bad people that shouldn't have them," Trump said. "These are felons and these are bad people – when you have 3,000 shootings in Chicago from January 1st, when you have 4,000 people killed in Chicago by guns from the beginning of the presidency of Barack Obama, his hometown, you have to have stop and frisk. You need more police."
Democrat Hillary Clinton said stop-and-frisk was found unconstitutional, partly because it was "ineffective." It also has had unintended consequences, she said, by putting more black and Latino men in prison for minor offenses.
